Updating the Latest on the HHS Mandate
Now
is not the time to sit and watch!
Over the past several weeks, the United States Catholic Conference of
Bishops has raised our awareness of some serious issues and concerns
coming from the HHS health care mandates. While the temptation is to
sit back and let others engage in the discussions, it is important
that each of us takes the time to become aware of the issues and the
impact that these mandates have on our right to freedom of religious
expression. Once we become informed, we need to express our views and
articulate our values and beliefs.
Please take some time to read the material. The USCCB has prepared
some helpful information as well as a convenient way to communicate
with your Congressional representatives.
Also below is an article from Bloomberg News Service which quotes some
of our members.
Take some time to read, reflect and respond on this urgent issue.
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops
issued a statement
late on Friday declaring that the small alteration President Barack
Obama had announced earlier in the day to a regulation that would
force all health-care plans in the United States to cover
sterilizations and all FDA-approved contraceptives--including those
that cause abortion--is 'unacceptable" because, among other things, it
does not protect the freedom-of-conscience rights of secular
for-profit employers, or secular non-profit employers, or religious
insurers, or self-insured religious employers, or individual
Americans. (MORE)
The U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services announced last week that almost all employers, including
Catholics employers, will be forced to offer their employees’
health coverage that includes abortion-inducing drugs,
sterilization, and contraception.
Bishop Lennon calls this a severe assault and denial of the most
fundamental First Amendment freedom, religious liberty. Below is
the list of Congressional Representatives and the two Senators
from Ohio. Here is a message you can write, call or fax
or email at
www.usccb.org/conscience.
Dear
Senator or Representative:
As a constituent, I am asking that you please co-sponsor or
at least support the “Respect for Rights of Conscience” act
(H.R. 1179, S. 1467). This measure ensures that the rights of
conscience of all participants in our nation’s health care system
will be respected.
